Doctors are people who heal the sick. They are also known as physicians. But what does the Bible say about doctors? In Matthew 9:12, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.” Jesus was a man of peace who cared deeply for others. He recognized that sick people need doctors and that using “earthly remedies” is not wrong. Jesus performed many healing miracles while on Earth, and His compassion for those in need is an example of a good healer.

In today’s world, there is still much suffering and disease. Doctors can help ease this suffering by using their knowledge and skills. Just as Jesus would not hesitate to heal someone, doctors should also not hesitate to use their God-given talents to help those in need. After all, caring for the sick is one of the most important things we can do. It shows that we care about our fellow humans and want to see them healed in joy. This would reflect the character of God Himself.

How Are Doctors Different From Jesus?

The main thing that differentiates doctors from Jesus is that doctors are paid for their services. They have made a career out of caring for the sick. Jesus, on the other hand, was not a doctor by profession. He was a carpenter and a preacher. However, He still healed people because it was part of His ministry.

Another difference is that doctors use medicine to heal people, while Jesus heals people through miracles. Of course, some doctors are also miracle workers. The term “miracle workers” pertains to those who have achieved medical feats that no other person has.

Jesus’ miracles are a sign of His divinity. They are proof that he is the Son of God. On the other hand, doctors’ miracles signify their skills and training. While doctors and Jesus care for the sick, they do it differently. But ultimately, their goal is the same: to ease suffering and bring healing.

What Is the Hippocratic Oath?

The Hippocratic Oath is a set of ethical principles traditionally taken by physicians. The original oath, written in the late fifth century BCE, was attributed to the Greek physician Hippocrates. It includes a vow to practice medicine ethically and honestly, to maintain patients’ confidentiality, and to teach medical knowledge responsibly. The modern version of the oath has been revised several times but still contains many of the same principles. Medical students take the oath before they begin their clinical training.

The Hippocratic oath aligns with Jesus’ mission to heal the sick and care for the needy. In Matthew 25:35-36, Jesus says, “For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.” This verse shows that Jesus admires those who show compassion and care for others. Therefore, He calls on His followers to do the same. The Hippocratic Oath echoes this call to action and reminds physicians to put their patients’ needs first.

What Were Doctors Like During Jesus’ Time Here on Earth?

The Bible doesn’t give us much information about doctors during Jesus’ time on Earth. What we do know is that they were highly respected members of society. As the Jewish people said: “He who saves a life, it is as if he has saved the whole world.”

This shows just how much value was placed on human life. And, since doctors were the ones who were responsible for saving lives, they were held in very high esteem. It can be assumed that during Jesus’ time, doctors used only the tools that were available to them at the time. This would have included things like leeches, bloodletting, and lancing.

We also know that they believed in the four humors: black bile, yellow bile, phlegm, and blood. They thought these needed to be balanced for a person to be healthy. While their methods may seem primitive to us now, they were the best available at the time. And we can be sure they did everything they could to save lives.

What Are Doctors Like These Days?

Doctors these days are very different from the doctors in Jesus’ time. This is because, back then, there was no such thing as modern medicine. Instead, people relied on herbal remedies and prayer to heal the sick.

Through training and experience, doctors can save lives nowadays. They use cutting-edge technology to diagnose and treat illnesses. And they are always learning new ways to improve the quality of care they provide. But even though doctors have changed a lot over the years, some things remain the same. For instance, doctors still take an oath not to harm patients. They are also committed to helping their patients in any way possible. This aligns with Jesus’ compassion and love for people on earth, where He once performed miracles to save many lives.

Bottom Line

The Bible makes it clear that Jesus acknowledges people’s need for doctors. After all, doctors are skilled and knowledgeable in the medical field. They help maintain our health and well-being and are vital to our society. While the Bible doesn’t specifically mention doctors, it is clear that God has given some people the ability to help others. This shows just how much God loves us and cares for us. He always finds a way to help us and ensure we are taken care of. So, if you’re ever feeling down about going to the doctor, remember that God will make a way to help you and live healthily. You could also be healed through prayer and faith, as God Himself is a doctor.
